
Due to hot weather and droughts brought on by El Nino, rice producing countries including India, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam – where 60% of the world’s rice is grown – are expected to see a drop in grain stocks by the end of the year.
The number is expected to plummet to 19 million tons, compared to the 42 million tons back in 2013, according to The Independent.
So, the world is expected to suffer a major rice shortage, which would ultimately lead to an increase in price. What does that mean for us?
Well, considering rice is a staple food in the Middle East, there’s a bunch of meals we’ll be missing out on if the world really runs out of rice. Let’s just hope that’s not the case.
